Originated in India in 3000 B.C., the original practices and postures of yoga are found carved on stones in the Indus Valley. The practice of yoga was developed as a pathway to achieve divine enlightenment and harmony between the mind and the soul of a human body. The continues practice of yoga over the years revealed itself as a cure of many diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure, and many physical injuries and chronic pains. This versatile practice has been occasionally mentioned in Upanishads, Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita. But it gained greater importance in the Post Classical period (800 AD to 1700 AD) when the followers of Patanjali yoga realized it’s asanas, kriyas and pranayamas as a source to cleanse body and mind. The yoga that we know today was introduced to us by Swami Vivekananda. However, it is not the same form as it used to be many centuries ago. With the changing time, the practice has also been influenced but it is still based on the same classical concepts pronounced by Patanjali.
