India is known to the world for being the treasure trove of beautiful textiles and embroideries. At Bodice, we combine cutting-edge technology with traditional craftsmanship. The designer Ruchika Sachdeva who started her own label in the year 2011 — BODICE, sees fashion from a distinct perspective.

The International Woolmark Prize recipient 2018, is a passionate fashion designer working within the integrities of sustainable and ethical fashion. She won the Woolmark Prize for her collection of women’s wear and considers that moment to be the defining one for both, her brand and herself. Her journey as she recalls started from the very beginning as when she was younger, she would often drape and stitch her mother’s dupattas. Seeing her sister mould glass and metal to new forms, Sachdeva’s quest and curiosity about clothes kept rising.

A graduate from the London School of Fashion, the designer in 2014, won the Vogue India Fund Competition, backing a fund to grow her label Bodice. She had, prior to this also gained experience by working under the brand Vivienne WestWood as an intern. For her, sustainability is ingrained in the essence of her brand. When asked about the inspiration behind the style of clothing, she says that her garments should mean more to the wearer than just clothes, the style of clothes are based on this thought.

The techniques and construction style involves sharp and clean silhouettes with soft tailoring bound in a way to bring in fluidity, movement and intricate details. Ruchika had the zeal to start her own brand when she had sent in her graduation collection to the Gen Next Show at Lakme Fashion Week.

“The journey that led to it ranged from finding it difficult to buy elevated essentials in India to reinvent vintage clothes in college” — Ruchika Sachdeva
