1. Sir, how did you get inclined towards fashion?
My inclination towards fashion started when I was very young. My father was an engineer and something about the construction of things and how they’re engineered always excited me. Growing up around family members from the field of science definitely played an important role in my approach towards fashion. I was intrigued by the aesthetics of his complex mathematical blueprints and I would make similar drawings with coloured chalk on the walls of my house. It was something I enjoyed more than anything else as a kid and what stayed with me from those times is an understanding of how simple units come together to make a whole.
2. Have you always wanted to experiment with fashion?
I have always enjoyed experimenting with fashion. Back in the day, learning about fashion at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, was new and exciting; I remember experimenting with drapes, developing patterns and naturally, I felt inclined to creating imagery that had a definite shape and form. I believe fashion is one of the most beautiful forms of self-expression and I have always tried to express myself through what I create. Fashion should be about innovation and creating something which sparks an emotion within.
4. What inspired you to start your own label?
Like I said earlier, I grew up in a family of engineers and scientists, that truly formed the basis of how I looked at fashion. What inspired me to start my own label was that I wanted to put my own ideas about fashion out in the world. My approach towards fashion has always been inspired by the science, structure and form behind clothing. All of my design and fashion experiences culminated into the creation of my own eponymous couture label, Amit Aggarwal. With my own label, I had the freedom to create an independent design language that agreed with my personal understanding of the craft and industry.
5. Where all have you showcased, nationally and internationally?
We have showcased our collection in India, France, Italy, the United Kingdom and our collections are available also in the UAE, USA etc.

6. Is there a particular collection which is very close to your heart and why?
I have to say every collection is special in its own way but one collection that will always be close my heart has to be our firstIndian couture collection, ‘Crystalis’ from 2018. There’s something so beautiful about firsts. The collection was our first shot at Indian couture and to see how much love and appreciation we received for it was something that will always stay with me.
7. The most memorable moment in your fashion journey till now?
One of the most memorable moments that I remember so distinctly even now was on the day of my first fashion show back in 2012, we had just finished the show and Anaita Shroff Adjania came up to me and congratulated me with the warmest hug. She’s someone I had always looked up to and that reaction from her is a memory that will be etched in my mind forever.
8. Milestones you would like to share about?
There have been so many milestones along the way that have a special place for us as a brand.
I think the recent milestone that I think of has to be the opening of our new flagship store at The Kila in New Delhi. It’s something that we have poured our heart into and it’s a true reflection of what the brand Amit Aggarwal is all about.
9. A designer you idolize?
Azzedine Alaia. He had a beautiful way with clothes. The way he molded his clothes to the female form, designing clothes for the female body. His work challenged the preconceived notions of femininity and that’s something that has always been an inspiration for me.
10. Why do you choose to bring sustainability at the forefront in fashion?
We all have a responsibility towards the environment we live in. Fashion is one of the most polluting industries and that’s something that all we need to work towards improving. Fashion brands must be responsible for what they do. We’re all aware of issues about climate change and I think every small move contributes to it in one way or another so yes the need for consciousness while creating is definitely important.

11. An artist you relate to most whose ideology can be a part of your collection?
An artist whose ideology I can relate most to has got to be Zaha Hadid. Throughout her career, she pushed the boundaries of form and function in the field of architecture. The sculptural dynamism of her radical architecture and design work and how she took the strongest materials in the world and manipulated them to form objects that appear soft and hard at the same time is something I have always been able to relate with.
12. Being an ideal for many, if there is anything that you would want to change in the fashion industry, what would it be?
Of course, it is an industry that I am part of and have immense respect for. That being said, if there’s one thing I would like to change in thefashion industry, it would have to be accountability. All of us working in this industry have a responsibility towards our customers, employees and every single person involved in the process. Also, honesty while designing is another thing that I stand for.
