He went on to sell his books to gather money to be able to purchase the admission form for NIFT. Luckily, he got through and completed his graduation in fashion designing from NIFT in 1999. After graduation, he set up a small workshop, and since then he has been using his label i.e. Sabyasachi and today, he is one of the most powerful and successful Indian designers. Masaba Gupta, a young bold fashion designer graduated from SNDT Mumbai in fashion design. Masaba literally means ‘wildflower’ in an African language, which is very well reflected in her unique collections! It was in the second year of graduation that Masaba created her first collection of just 7 garments, which stood out from the rest of her classmates with her signature kitsch factor. This caught the eye of renowned fashion designer Wendell Rodricks. After graduation, she created a niche for herself with unconventional and quirky style ideas in a wide range of options such as eclectic dhotis and angrakhas, to silk sarees and even jumpsuits! Manish Malhotra is the fashion designer who needs absolutely no introduction. He knew from his early days that he wanted to enter the glamorous world of fashion. He would dress up his mother and other relatives. He further took up this interest by taking art classes, where he became really good at sketching and painting. His talent and interest grew and he soon started working with a small boutique, taking his first steps towards his journey as one of India’s top designers. Having absolutely no formal education in this field did not stop him from becoming a successful designer. 4. Rimple & Harpreet Narula
This dynamic designer duo is very well known for their designs in Sanjay Leela Bansal’s movie Padmavat. Harpreet Narula, born to an industrial family of Punjab, was studying Economics in Hindu College when he met his wife Rimple who was studying Arts at Hansraj College. It was soon after they tied the knot that they announced the launch of their label Rimple and Harpreet Narula Couture, with the philosophy of re-visiting traditional and ancient Indian workmanship while giving it a contemporary twist. Their label is a divine combination of Harpreet’s flair for art and luxury with Rimple’s fearlessness. Their exquisite collections include a wide range of hand-crafted textures in silhouettes which are edgy, mixed with couture and kitsch.
5. Anita Dongre
Anita Dongre, also known as the designer who broke societal stereotypes to pursue her dreams! Anita’s pull towards fashion started at a very young age when she saw the women in the house create beautiful garments with fabrics. She pursued fashion design degree from SNDT University, Mumbai. After facing many challenges, Anita Dongre has made a name for herself not only in India but also internationally. Her personal style i.e. effortless luxury is also well reflected in collections. From putting pockets in lehengas to re imagining weaves and embroideries from thousands of years ago to creating a cacophony of prints, the clothes Anita designs are practical but aesthetically inclines of the woman of today. Her clothes reflect her deeply-rooted values and modern sensibilities. According to her, the key purpose of fashion is wearability, and comfort which are is just as important as the design aesthetics.
